The Phantom of the Opera is often mentioned as the most popular silent film ever. The film based on the Gaston Leroux novel, stars Lon Chaney as Erickm a mysterious phantom who lives in the catacombs of the Paris opera house.
The scene of the Paris opera house, as recreated here, is said to be authentic in every detail. Yet, the impressive set pales in next to Chaney's performance for the ages. The plot of this film shows how Erik, who falls in love with Christine (Mary Philbin) an understudy, terrorizes the lead soprano, until she flees the opera. Once his beloved, Christine has the lead, she seeks out the Phantom who strangely has helped her, The ending is one that is both tragic and ominous. The ending is one that is both trabgic and ominous.
A true all-time Classic.
